After the long day at Iwo Jima, things started to wind down with the main part of the tour. Sunday there was a half day visit around the island to a museum and then to a landing beach, ending with the Farewell Dinner of the Victory in the Pacific. It was a nice dinner and we’ve met some very interesting folks. I’ll wrap up on that later.
Monday was technically a travel day, but since our flight didn’t leave until 11:45 pm, we had the whole day. We spent some time at the lovely beach. It’s very odd because there is a reef about 150 yards from the shore, which keeps the waves from reaching the shore. It makes the water extremely calm and no more than chest deep. It’s cool, but not cold and was extremely nice.
The hotel that we’re at (Dusit Thani), sees mostly Asian tourists from Japan and Korea. And one thing about the Asians that I have noticed is that most of them do not have what we would consider traditional swimwear, probably because of their light skin. But most wear what appear to be leggings and long sleeve lightweight swimwear. As a very, very white girl, this is something I can get behind. The sun is brutal here. Gregg and I were saying we’d love to come back, maybe spending a week on Maui and then heading back to Guam.
On Monday, historian Jon Parsall showed a movie about Pelelui and gave a brief Q&A session. The trip to Peleliu (based in Palau) is the 4 day add on for our trip. It’s about a 2 hour plane ride from Guam, but is going to make tonight a very long night, as we won’t get into Palau until around 2am on Tuesday. Then we have a couple of days more touring before heading home.
