Sea day – Monday

Monday

We were planning on sleeping in since this was our first sea day and the last couple of days had been on the go.  But at 5am pacific time, I was wide awake.   Jamie was up at 6, so we all decided to head to the dining room for breakfast.   In contrast to the great dinner we had there the night before, the breakfast experience wasn’t that great.  The service was REALLY slow, then when the food came, the egg eaters said the eggs were just a smidge warmer than cold.   Marge didn’t get her toast until we were all finished and about to walk out.  So that didn’t start the day on a great note.

Since it was a sea day, it was a relaxing day.  We all found a base spot to crash in the observation lounge to watch the water go by.  Then, people would break off during the day.  Marge went to trivia and Lizzie went to the art auction to people watch.  Jamie ended up getting a pedicure.  We played Yahtzee and Lizzie tried to teach us cribbage, but it was too complex for that early in the morning.

In the observation lounge, they put out a light lunch so Jamie, Bob, Marge and I ate lunch there.  They also had some nice light deserts and I ended up with a red velvet small cupcake that was excellent.  So far, the food has been really good and the portions are really reasonable.

I went down to the cabin in the early afternoon and discovered my key didn’t work.  That was a pain in the ass.  So I had to track back to the Guest Services desk and wait in line.   The lady rekeyed my card and I went back up the cabin and it still didn’t work.  I was a smidge irritated.  Thankfully, the room steward was down the hall and he came to help.  But he tried my key and it worked.  So then I was really irritated.  So he had me try again and it still didn’t work.  Apparently, you have to very forcefully slam the lever down after tapping your room key.

The room steward tried to pass this off as normal, but I told him I’ve been on at least 12 cruises and that’s not normal.  In fact, we were on this same ship in December and I know you shouldn’t have to use the equivalent of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s upper body strength in order to open the door. When I heard Jamie approach, she also couldn’t get the door open.   So we had a practice session and now we can get our own door open, while also getting an upper body workout.

Dinner found all of us in the main dining room and it was really good.  Several of us had the Parmesan pork chop, which was delicious.  Others had roast beef and Bob stuck with his normal fish.  He’ll have gills by the time the trip is done.  The meal and the conversation took us about 2 hours and we were all surprised to see how much time had passed.

After dinner, I went to the Observation Lounge to find a table in order to type the blog.  At the front of the lounge, there was a piano player playing light music.  It was OK to start, but then he sang American Pie so it was hard to type with that in the background.  But then he started on a terrible rendition of Benny and the Jets.  Benny!  Benny!  Benny and the Jets!  I had to pause until that screechy noise was over so that I could concentrate.

Jamie ended up joining me and we stayed up talking for quite a bit until we decided to call it a day.  So we went back to force our door open so we could get some sleep.   Tomorrow is Juneau and we’ve rented a big car for all of us to go to Mendenhall Glacier and surrounding area.  Should be fun!

Not a single picture today so I repeated a Space Needle shot.  I’ll make up for it tomorrow.
